An Eye on Homeless Furry Friends...

“The World is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing”

- Albert Einstein -

Being homeless is one of the most painful challenges someone can face. Imagine you are alone on the street. You have nowhere else to go, and no one in the city is waiting for you or concerned about your safety. You're so hungry that even the smallest action feels hopeless. Hundreds of people pass by, but you are unable to communicate with them, and they are unaware that you are truly suffering while lying on a freezing pavement, alone, neglected, and tired. Then how does it differ only for animals? … If animals can think and feel, which is a possibility, it is most likely what many of the homeless dogs and cats you see during the day are going through. Do we have the choice to take a blind eye to the fact that many live creatures are suffering and striving for survival while being utterly disregarded and abandoned? These days millions of animals have become stray, lost, or in shelters. But no one thinks why those animals are alone on the road or why they became orphans.

Animals that become homeless or displaced are a serious issue. The majority of them were either abandoned by their lawful owners or were born homeless. Leaving innocent animals on the road is one of the worst and most heinous acts perpetrated by humans. Because of that, those animals become stray animals and they have no recourse. In Sri Lanka, most of the time, cruel people leave puppies and kittens near schools, temples, and streets. After that, those innocents have to suffer for their entire lives. Since they cannot talk or ask for help, they have to struggle with dreadful conditions. The most miserable thing is that many people do not even bother to satisfy the hunger of a homeless animal. Only a few real animal lovers realize the sadness of homeless animals and give their helping hand to them. Leaving helpless animals on the road like garbage should be strongly condemned. Street dogs and cats deserve to live. They are not less precious because they are straying.

I also got the chance to rescue an innocent puppy from the street one year ago. On that day I realized the value of adopting a homeless animal since it became a happy ending forever. When I found the puppy, she was cold and helpless. Unfortunately, she was left in the street just a few days after she was born. She was suffering without food and shelter. That incident brought tears to my eyes. So, I decided to adopt her, and I named her ‘Bobley’. Since then, she became a part of our family. When Bobley grew up, I perceived that saving the life of the homeless is better than buying a pet. Because only if we are kind enough to adopt them from the street, they become pets. Otherwise, they are called ‘stray’. I was able to prove that rescue is not just a verb but also it is a lifetime promise. I can not understand how people leave animals in the street.

All in all, it's clear that as humans we should spread love by giving homes to those who need it. Every year, over 3 million street animals are suffering without having a place to be called ‘home’. The only thing they are expecting from us is love. They are dying without food, love, and care. They are too helpless to be ignored. We should recognize that homeless animals are crying out to us for help, and we must comply by providing the required assistance for them. Most people use seemingly sensible reasons like "We can't help everyone" to rationalize their inaction. Yes, you can’t help everyone, but at least help one. It’s better if you are kind enough to adopt a street dog or cat. It will be a remarkable change in those furry pets’ lives.

If you are a real animal lover, walk in the street for a while, you will find a forever friend. Every time we are buying an expensive pet, a homeless furry friend loses the chance at finding a forever home. Don’t buy while the homeless die!
